About Christianity

Christianity is many things, depending on your perspective. It is one of the great world religions, with many millions of adherents. It is an ancient faith, with its beginnings in the earthly life of Jesus of Nazareth some 2000 years ago, with roots even further back in ancient Judaism. This tells us that it probably has something to say that is worth listening to, and that it can continue to make a huge contribution to human life and thought. It cannot be easily dismissed.

Christianity is an amazing phenomenon; from its beginning with a handful of followers of a crucified rabbi, it survived persecution and became the religion of the Roman and Byzantine empires and spread throughout the world. Even now, when it appears to be dying out in the western world, it is thriving and growing amidst persecution and antipathy in the majority world. This tells us that it has something to offer, because despite opposition and adversity, people keep seeking Christ.

Most importantly, Christianity centres on belief in Jesus Christ, whom Christians believe to be God-made-human, who entered into his wayward creation to save it and reconcile humanity to himself. This is an extraordinary claim, but one only has to read about the words and teachings of Jesus to realise that he can't be easily dismissed. Christianity changes lives, not because of, but in spite of its fallible adherents. Christianity changes lives because Christ changes lives. Christianity alone offers the solution to the root cause of grief and despair and evil and helplessness in the world, because Christ dealt with sin.
